Is self-care… selfish?

The concepts of self-love and self-care have become increasingly popular in recent years, with many people advocating for the importance of taking care of oneself in order to be able to give to others. Despite its growing popularity, there are still many people who are against self-care and self-love.

One reason for this opposition is that some people view self-care and self-love as selfish or narcissistic. They believe that putting oneself first is inherently selfish and that it's more important to focus on others. This belief can be rooted in cultural, religious, or personal values that emphasize the importance of putting others first. It could also stem from a displaced sense of guilt instilled by a narcissistic individual.

Another reason for the backlash against self-care and self-love is the fear of appearing weak or vulnerable. In our society, there’s often a stigma attached to taking care of oneself and acknowledging your own needs. Some people may feel that admitting that they need to take care of themselves is a sign of weakness,  so they resist self-care in order to maintain a strong image.

Finally, some people may simply not understand what self-care and self-love truly mean. They may view it as indulgent or frivolous, rather than as an essential component of a healthy and balanced life. But self-care isn’t a luxurious treat reserved for the wealthy- we are so blessed to have many local and affordable holistic modalities to relieve stress such as Polarity Therapy, Massage, Reiki, Crystal Healing etc.!

It's important to recognize that self-care and self-love are not selfish or narcissistic. In fact, they are essential for our well-being and optimize our ability to give to others. By taking care of ourselves, we can better meet our own needs, which allows us to be more present and available to those around us.
